MIS 2200 Prerequisite Information

All students registering for MIS 2200, Business Communication, are required to meet one of the following prerequisites: STAT 1040 or MATH 1030, 1050, or 1100 (or Math ACT score of at least 25 or Math SAT score of at least 580); GPA of 2.5 or higher, and one of the following: (1) passing score on Huntsman School of Business English Usage Exam, (2) ACT English Section score of at least 25, (3) English AP score of 3 or better, or (4) completion of OSS 1550 with a B or better grade.

  • The test is available in the CIL lab (or in remote sites, just like the CIL exam).
  • USU ID is required to enter the lab.
  • No appointment is necessary
  • A maximum of 90 minutes is allowed for taking the test.
  • The fee is $5 each time the test is taken.
  • The test can be taken three times with no required waiting period.
  • Further attempts to pass the test must be approved by Peggy Buttars (Business CEO Center), Megen Ralphs (Advising Center), or Marianna Larsen (MIS Department).

The CIL testing laboratory (Eccles Science Learning Center Room 131) is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The following books may used to study for the test:

  • Business English (Guffey) – ISBN 0-324-36606-X
  • HOW 11 (Clark) – ISBN 0-324-39993-6
  • HOW 11 Workbook – ISBN 0-324-39995-2

Note: The Guffey book is more comprehensive in explaining the concepts whereas HOW 11 is a reference book stating rules and examples. On the other hand, the HOW 11 and the HOW 11 Workbook will be required when taking MIS 2200. However, realizing that the test must be passed before registering for MIS 2200, study materials should be chosen wisely.
