Accelerated Business Core (Summer Program)
The Accelerated Business Core (ABC) at Utah State University is an intensive, one-semester (summer) course of study specially designed for non-business undergraduate degree holders who wish to pursue graduate degrees in business. The ABC provides an exposure to the core business functional areas to build an understanding of the context in which business decisions are made. Passing the ABC will satisfy most prerequisite business course requirements to begin advanced study in various graduate business programs (MBA, MAcc, MSHR, IMBA, etc.)
Because the ABC is in lieu of prerequisite undergraduate business courses, students who have undergraduate degrees in business fields (such as accounting, finance, business information systems, marketing, production, management, and, in some cases, economics, etc.) have probably already satisfied all or most of these requirements and need not take the ABC.
The ABC is taught during a special 10-week term during summer semester. Since one year of curriculum is structured into only 10 weeks, the ABC is an extremely concentrated and intensive educational experience, demanding essentially all of a student's time and energy during those 10 weeks. Work, family events, vacations, and other outside conflicts and commitments cannot be "worked around." If a student is unable or unwilling to make that level of commitment, that student should not take the ABC but should instead satisfy the business core requirements on a course-by-course basis at the undergraduate level.
The ABC consists of seven modules (13.5 credits), which are viewed as separate courses. Students can take one or more of the classes.
- Financial and Managerial Accounting (ACCT 6010) - 3 credits
- Corporate Finance (BA 6410) - 1.5 credits
- Marketing (BA 6510) - 1.5 credits
- Production (BA 6710) - 1.5 credits
- Micro and Macroeconomics (ECON 6900) - 3 credits
- Management (MHR 6050) - 1.5 credits
- Legal and Ethical Environment of Business (MHR 6070) - 1.5 credits
